HKEX Regular Trading Sessions
Trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange runs across two continuous weekday stretches. The market shuts entirely on public holidays and half-days.
| Session | Time (HKT) | Activity |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-opening auction | 08:30-09:00 | Order input and amendments |
| Morning session | 09:30-12:00 | Continuous trading |
| Lunch break | 12:00-13:00 | Market closed |
| Afternoon session | 13:00-16:00 | Continuous trading |
| Closing auction (single-price) | 16:00-16:10 | Closing price determination |
Morning: 09:30-12:00 HKT
Trading begins at 09:30 HKT sharp. The first 30 minutes (09:30-10:00) often see higher volatility as overnight orders from global markets are absorbed.
Afternoon: 13:00-16:00 HKT
The market reopens at 13:00 HKT. The final hour (15:00-16:00) is the most liquid window for international traders because it overlaps with the London open and the New York pre-market.
Lunch Break: 12:00-13:00
No trading occurs during this hour. The break is fixed; the exchange does not reopen early.
How does the Hong Kong Stock Exchange open and close?
- Pre-opening auction (08:30-09:00 HKT): Only order input and amendments. No trades execute during this period.
- Closing auction (16:00-16:10 HKT): A single-price auction determines the closing price for the day. Orders entered during this period execute at the closing single price.
HKEX Holiday Schedule and Half-Days

- Tomb-Sweeping Day (5 April 2026, observed 7 April)
- Labour Day (1 May)

- Mid-Autumn Festival (day following, 26 September)
- National Day (1 October)
- Double Ninth Festival (18 October, observed 19 October)
- Christmas Day (25 December)
- Boxing Day (26 December)
Half-days: The HKEX may close at 12:00 HKT on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Check the official HKEX calendar for confirmation each year.
Global Market Overlap: Tokyo, Shanghai, London, New York
For international traders, the critical overlap window is 15:00-16:00 HKT. Here is why:
| Market | Opens (local) | Opens (HKT) | Overlap with HKEX |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Stock Exchange | 09:00 JST | 08:00 HKT | Full morning session |
| Shanghai / Shenzhen | 09:30 CST | 09:30 HKT | Full day (same time zone) |
| London Stock Exchange | 08:00 GMT (winter) / 08:00 BST (summer) | 16:00 HKT (winter) / 15:00 HKT (summer) | Last hour of afternoon session |
| New York Stock Exchange | 09:30 EST (winter) / 09:30 EDT (summer) | 21:30 HKT (both) | No overlap (opens after HKEX closes) |
Critical overlap: 15:00-16:00 HKT catches the London open and the New York pre-market. This is the only window when a trader can execute a trade on HKEX while both London and New York are active.
Best Times for International Traders to Watch HKEX
- Tokyo-based traders: The entire morning stretch (09:30-12:00 HKT) is liquid and overlaps fully with Tokyo's morning.
- Shanghai/Shenzhen traders: The full day (09:30-16:00 HKT) is identical to your local time.
- London-based traders: Watch the last hour (15:00-16:00 HKT) or, in summer, the final two hours (14:00-16:00 HKT). In winter, London opens at 16:00 HKT, so only the closing auction is live.
- New York-based traders: You cannot trade live on HKEX during your business day. NY opens at 21:30 HKT, nearly six hours after HKEX closes. The best you can do is place pre-market orders during 15:00-16:00 HKT (your 03:00-04:00 EST) for execution at the HKEX opening the next day.
Bottom line for New York traders: Do not watch the HKEX closing auction live. Instead, set orders during the 15:00-16:00 HKT window (your early morning) to take advantage of the London-HK overlap, then check results after NY opens.
