Hong Kong noon is New York the previous night

At 12:00 HKT on 15 January 2026, it is 23:00 the previous day in New York. The gap is 13 hours. By 15 July 2026, the same Hong Kong noon is 00:00 in New York. That gap is 12 hours. The clock in Hong Kong never moves. New York does.

Book calls in the New York morning, Hong Kong evening

Ignore advice to find a midday overlap. There is not one that works for both sides. The window is narrow.

In winter (EST, UTC-5), schedule calls for 20:00 to 22:00 HKT. That is 07:00 to 09:00 in New York. You catch the start of the US workday and the tail of Hong Kong's.

In summer (EDT, UTC-4), shift the window later: 21:00 to 23:00 HKT. That is 09:00 to 11:00 in New York.

If you are dialling from New York, call between 07:00 and 09:00 EST in winter, or 09:00 and 11:00 EDT in summer. Do not call after 11:00 New York time. Hong Kong will be asleep.

Winter: 13 hours behind (EST to HKT)

New York runs on Eastern Standard Time from early November to mid-March. The offset is UTC-5. Hong Kong stays fixed at UTC+8. The difference is 13 hours. New York is behind.

Example: 20:00 HKT on a Tuesday is 07:00 EST the same Tuesday.

Summer: 12 hours behind (EDT to HKT)

On the second Sunday of March, New York moves to Eastern Daylight Time. The offset becomes UTC-4. Hong Kong does not move. The difference shrinks to 12 hours.

Example: 21:00 HKT is 09:00 EDT.

Skip the "split the difference" strategy

Some guides suggest a 14:00 HKT call to catch New York at 01:00. That is bad advice. Nobody is productive at 01:00. Stick to the evening window in Hong Kong, morning in New York. If that fails, use asynchronous messages.

Why New York moves and Hong Kong does not

Hong Kong abandoned daylight saving in 1979. The seasonal shift is entirely on the US side. When New York springs forward in March, the gap drops from 13 hours to 12 hours. When it falls back in November, the gap returns to 13.

This is the same pattern as the Hong Kong vs London difference: the change happens on the other side, not in Hong Kong. For more on why, see the history of daylight saving in Hong Kong.

When the Hong Kong vs New York time difference next changes

New York moves to EDT on 9 March 2027. The difference drops from 13 hours to 12 hours overnight. Mark that date. The overlap window shifts one hour later on the Hong Kong side. If you have a recurring meeting, move it from 20:00 HKT to 21:00 HKT after the switch.
